Novatech Measurements have undertaken a major development programme to design a low range force transducer with the ultimate goal of resolving forces down to 1 micro-Newton.

The device is a compact loadcell operating in compression mode as standard. There is a growing market for such a device, given the growth in miniaturisation especially through Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and nanotechnology. The loadcell bridges the gap between existing low force sensors and specialist techniques like the atomic force microscope which is very limited for many industrial applications.
